Jam Crust Skewers

Jump To Recipe Print Recipe

If your child won't eat bread crusts then try this hack to turn those crusts into a fun snack instead!

Close up on Ciara holding one jam crust skewer.

Got a crust hating child? Then this little food hack is for you!

Rather than throwing away those crusts you can turn them into a fun sweet snack that the kids will love!

One slice of bread having the crusts removed with a knife.

The first step is to remove the crust from the bread.

Make a cut in one corner of the slice of bread and then cut all the way around the inside of the crust, separating the bread from the crust.

Next, spread some jam on the inside of the crust.

I've used raspberry jam here for any kind of jam will work just fine.

Jam being spread around the crust.

Roll the crust up tightly into a pinwheel and then insert a wooden skewer into the bottom of the pinwheel, pushing up through the crust.

This will hold it all together while baking.

Crust being made into a spiral.

Spread a little butter onto the top. This will help to make it lovely and golden brown.

Then bake at 180c fan for 10 minutes.

Skewer being added to the spiraled crust.

The result is a really fun snack and the kids will have no idea that you have re-purposed their unwanted crust!

The wooden skewer is obviously very sharp so be sure to remove it for younger children.

Description

If your child won't eat bread crusts then try this hack to turn those crusts into a fun snack instead!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices of bread
  • 4 tsp of jam
  • 1 tsp butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180c fan.
  2. The crust has to be taken off the bread in one long strip. So rather than making a sandwich as usual and then cutting off the crusts, you need to remove the crust first.
  3. Make a cut in one corner of the crust and then cut all along the inside of the crust to remove it from the bread.
  4. Spread the jam along the inside of the crust and then roll it up tightly until you have a pinwheel.
  5. Add a wooden skewer to the bottom and push up so that the pinwheels holds together.
  6. Spread some butter on the top of the pinwheel.
  7. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes.
  8. Once baked, allow to cool for a few minutes as the jam will be very hot.
  9. Remove the wooden skewers for younger children.

Great way to use up a jar of jam, and the kids got involved.

It was messy but they loved them!

Thank you for the idea xx
