Don’t eat eggs or have an egg allergy? I’ll show you how to make a very simple egg substitute using ground flaxseed and water.

I get a lot of questions and comments from readers about using egg substitutes in some of my recipes.

I have used “Flax Egg” before with good success so I thought I would share my recipe here which will hopefully help some of you guys who are dealing with egg allergies within your family.

How To Make A Flax Egg

Flax Egg is so easy to make. Its as simple as mixing some ground flaxseed with cold water and refrigerating for a few minutes.

The flaxseed absorbs the water and expands and will become quite thick after 10-15 minutes. This mixture can then be used in place of one medium egg in lots of recipes.

Ground or Whole Flaxseeds?

It’s important that you use ground flaxseeds to make a flax egg. Whole flaxseeds won’t absorb the water in the same way.

Recipes That Work Well With A Flax Egg

I find that it works well in pancakes, brownies, muffins and cookies.

It also works when making fish fingers, chicken nuggets, etc when used instead of an egg to get breadcrumbs to stick. It’s also great to add to burgers or meatballs to help them bind.

However, when it comes to very precise recipes such as cakes it doesn’t always perform quite so well. But it’s worth testing it out for yourself.

Try it with the following recipes:

Chocolate Chip Muffins

Chocolate Raspberry Pancakes

Crispy Salmon Nuggets

Quinoa Chicken Nuggets

Apple & Banana Brownies

Chia Egg

This recipe will apply the same to a chia egg. Use 1 tablespoon of chia seeds and 3 tablespoon of cold water.
