A refreshing and healthy summer snack for kids made with whole fruits.

Looking out at the weather today it seems a bit odd to be blogging about popsicles. It’s June so surely that means clear skies and warm weather. Apparently not!

Thankfully it was nicer over the weekend and I got a chance to use my brand new popsicle moulds.

My fussy eater is obsessed with a certain brand of stripped ice lolly. My local shop only sells them singly and she was racking up quite a popsicle bill every week when the weather has been nice!

You really can’t beat an ice-cold popsicle on a hot day though, so I decided to make my own!

Homemade Popsicles VS Store-Bought Popsicles

Cost!

Homemade Popsicles are much cheaper than store bought ones for sure!

All Natural!

These homemade real fruit popsicles only contains natural ingredients, so no food colourings, food dyes or artificial flavors that you might find in the store bought alternative.

And depending where you are in the world, some store bought popsicles also contain high fructose corn syrup.

Fun Activity!

My fresh fruit popsicles are a fun way to get the kids learning about different fruits and vegetables and creating their own flavour combinations rather than just opening a wrapper!

They can be proud that they have created their own popsicle too! It’s a great activity to do with the kids over those long summer holidays.

Hidden Vegetables!

By making your own popsicles you can also sneak in some hidden veggies that your kids might ordinarily turn their nose up at! We love a Hidden Veggie Recipe at My Fussy Eater.

Tackle Food Waste At Home!

It’s also a great way to use up any last few bits and pieces of fruit lingering in the fridge or the fruit bowl. I’m all about reducing our food waste at the moment so this makes me happy!

What Kinds Of Fruit Can You Use To Make Popsicles?

For these fruit popsicles I used strawberries, pineapple, blueberries, avocado and raspberries.

But you can try pretty much any combination depending on what fruit you have, is in season or what’s available where you live.

I had an avocado which was looking a bit beyond its best so decided to throw that in. I fully expected my fussy eater to dump the ice lolly when she got to that bit but she really surprised me by eating it all.

The beauty of this fruit popsicle recipe is that you can really experiment with different flavours and fruit and veg combinations until you come up with your perfect popsicle to enjoy on a hot summer day!

Whole Fruit Benefits

What I love most about these popsicles is that they use the whole fruit, rather than just the fruit juice so kids get 100% of the nutrients in the fruit (juicing removes the fibre and some water-soluble vitamins).

And if it get kids eating fruit that they ordinarily wouldn’t touch with a barge pole, well that’s a massive bonus too!

What Kind Of Popsicle Mold Should I Use?

There are heaps of different molds available to buy either in stores or online these days. You can even get really fancy and buy molds in different novelty shapes and colors.

Personally I prefer a silicone popsicle mold over say a plastic one as I find the popsicles are easier to remove once frozen and I think the silicone ones last a bit longer, but whatever you have or can afford to purchase will do the same job!

And if you don’t have molds already and don’t want to buy any, then you can always make do with things that you might already have at home.

You could use plastic cups or even those large ice cube trays could work for making smaller popsicles for little ones. Use the exact same method of letting the first layer freeze before sticking the popsicle sticks in and continue as per the rest of the recipes steps below.

If you do try my healthy popsicles, then please do leave me a comment and a star rating below. You can also share your pictures with me on Instagram. I always love to see your creations!
