It wouldn’t be Christmas without some homemade sausage rolls. Usually made with pork sausages and pastry, they can be quite heavy but try my lightened up version using chicken or turkey sausages and tortilla wraps instead.

We love sausage rolls all year round but I have to say they are an absolute must at Christmas time, especially homemade sausage rolls. They make a really tasty lunch or snack are brilliant party nibbles if you have guests.

This year I decided to make a lightened up version. Generally I use pork sausage meat and puff pastry which are both delicious but obviously quite high in calories and fat.

How To Make Healthy Sausage Rolls

My healthier sausage rolls are made using turkey or chicken sausages and instead of covering them in pastry I’m using tortilla wraps instead.

I removed the sausages from their skins and mixed it with a little chutney for some extra Christmas-y flavour.

I then took half the mixture and placed it on one of the wraps.

"sausage

Then simply roll up the wrap ensuring that the seam side stays down then cut into six sausage rolls.

Repeat with the remaining sausage meat and the other wrap. This recipe will make 12 sausage rolls in total.

"wrap

Transfer the sausage rolls onto a lined and greased tray and finish with an egg wash and some sesame seeds.

Bake in the oven at 200c for 20 minutes.

The result is delicious golden brown and crispy sausage rolls. All the taste and flavour, just a bit lighter on the calories and fat content.

Ingredient Substitutions

Sausages – I used turkey sausages in this recipe but chicken sausages will work just the same. You can of course use pork sausages if you prefer or even veggies sausages too.

Tortilla Wrap – I used a 50/50 white/wholemeal wrap but feel free to use all white or all wholemeal if you prefer.

Gluten Free – Gluten free wraps will work just fine.

Egg – If you have an egg allergy then you can use a little milk instead to wash the top of the sausage rolls

Sesame Seeds – These can be left out if you don’t like them. Or use poppy seeds instead.

Freezing Sausage Rolls

If you want to get ahead of your Christmas cooking and get these all prepped now then you can make the sausage rolls but instead of baking them, flash freeze them on a tray or plate for a few hours until hard.

Then transfer to a freezer bag or container to store in the freezer.

When you want to cook them you can bake them directly from frozen. Add them to a lined and greased baking tray, adding an extra 10 minutes approximately to the cooking time.
