Crunchy on the outside and soft and warm on the inside, these Soda Bread Scones are delicious spread with butter and served with my Easy Irish Stew! They also taste great the next day with jam for breakfast.

Next Saturday is of course St Patrick’s Day and I couldn’t let the day pass without sharing some traditional Irish recipes from my homeland!
I already shared the recipe for this super easy but oh so comforting Irish Beef Stew and today I’m showing you how to make the perfect accompaniment in the form of these delicious Soda Bread Scones!
This recipe is basically a cross between soda bread and a scone. It’s a savoury recipe, it doesn’t contain any sugar but that means it goes so well with so many different foods.
It tastes so delicious spread with butter and dipped into my Irish stew. But it also tastes equally as good served with a chunk of cheddar cheese and some chutney or relish.
My kids also love these for breakfast spread with strawberry jam. Delicious!

Making your own bread at home might seem intimidating but these are honest so easy. They don’t require any kneading or proving and you don’t need any special equipment or gadgets.
Buttermilk is now available is most big supermarkets but if you are having trouble tracking it down then you can use normal whole milk mixed with a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice.

If you try my recipe please come back and let me know what you think in the comments. I’ve also been getting so many messages and tags on Instagram from you guys making my recipes. Please keep sending me the pictures. Its always the highlight of my day to see them!

Ingredients
- 150g plain flour
- 120g wholemeal bread flour
- 50g oats
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- pinch of salt
- 50g cold butter, cut into cubes
- 200ml buttermilk
- 1 large egg
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200c and line 2 baking trays with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl mix together the plain flour, wholemeal flour, oats, baking powder, baking soda and salt with a spoon.
- Add in the cold cubed butter and rub it into the flour mixture with your fingers.
- Make a well in the middle of the mixture, pour in the buttermilk and crack in the egg. Mix the buttermilk and egg together quickly with a fork and then using a wooden spoon gradually mix in the flour mixture until everything is well combined.
- Divide the mixture into 8 lumps, adding 4 to each tray.
- With your hands mould each into a round shape and press down on the top with your hand to make them flat.
- Bake in the oven for 12 minutes and then transfer onto a cooling rack for a few minutes.
- These are best eaten warm and can also be re-heated in the oven or microwave.

Is the wholemeal flour plain or self-raising please?
Bianca Carey Spencer says
Hi Kerry, it’s wholemeal “bread” flour. You can get it in most supermarkets. Bread flour has a higher protein content needed for the bread.

I’m from Galway and moved to the United Kingdom about three years ago , and one thing I’ve always missed is soda bread nowhere sells what you get back home from the local bakery or mammys homemade !!
I recently started weaning and came across this site and yesterday tried these ( I’m awful at baking except muffins and a crumble which don’t require much skill lol ) but these were exceptional u ate 3 straight out of the oven the smell the taste the texture !! And I whipped them up in about ten minutes thank you sooo much for this recipe and my son adores them!!

Thank you!!!
I have a one year old that eats anything and everything and a 3 year old niece and 11 year old nephew that are SUPER picky and eat no vegetables. I’m taking care of them the whole month and became determined to have them eat vegetables. They did. I made the your cauliflower nuggets recipe and they LOVED them so much, they asked for more!

Oh that’s brilliant! So glad to hear it!
