A lot of parents, and I definitely include myself in this, can easily fall into the trap of giving their children the same foods day in day out.
With fussy eaters we often have a tendency to turn to their reliable favourites at meal times but this year I am trying to make more of an effort to introduce my kids to a wider variety of foods and flavours.
When Grana Padano and Prosciutto di San Daniele got in touch to see if I would like to work with them to create a kid-friendly lunch I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to push my children a little outside their food comfort zones!
Grana Padano and Prosciutto di San Daniele are two ingredients that are usually considered more to adults taste but by making them into a fun and colourful finger-food lunch I hoped to entice my kids to try them!
Grana Padano has been made in the Po Valley (Pianura Padanain) Northern Italy for almost 1000 years.
The term “Grana Padano” identifies a particular cheese produced in this designated geographical area, using specific raw materials and techniques, and following step-by-step procedures.
Its wheels are characterised by the marks of origin and if those marks are not there, then it is not Grana Padano.
Similarily, Prosciutto di San Daniele is only made in the Italian territory of San Daniele del Friuli and the origins of this product can be dated back to the 8th century BC when the curing of pork was first developed here.
Both Grana Padano and Prosciutto di San Daniele have been awarded PDO – Protected Designation of Origin – status by the European Union, meaning you can be assured of the authenticity and quality of these products which are recognisable by the PDO logo.
So back to my recipe and the fun lunch I decided to use these ingredients to make!
My kids love cheese on toast but I decided to put an Italian twist on this classic favourite by spreading a little pizza sauce onto sliced ciabatta and then topping with grated Grana Padano.
For the skewers, I layered slices of Prosciutto di San Daniele with lettuce, cherry tomatoes and cucumber using kid safe plastic skewers (I like these ones from Eats Amazing).
The toasties and skewers went down an absolute treat with my children. It was really nice to see them enjoy some new ingredients but still serve it in a way that is fun and enticing to them.
I think they would also make a really cute lunch to serve on a playdate, really tasty and nutritious and cute for the kids!

Love your idea of salad skewers with these toasties. My eldest loves anything served on a stick but won’t usually eat salad so this might well be the way forward for us!
