Cooking with kids is a great activity for the following reasons:

1. Get’s Kids Interested In Food

Quite often children are more inclined to eat a meal that they have helped to prepare themselves so if you have a fussy or picky eater in the family then this can be a great way to get them eating different foods!

2. An Opportunity For Learning

Following a recipe and making food with your kids is a great opportunity to get some learning in at the same time!

Talk about the ingredients you are using. Like where they have come from, how they are grown, what else those same ingredients could be used for!

Measuring ingredients out is a great visual way to learn about different measurements like, grams, ounces, pounds, fluid ounces and so on and so forth.

Even reading the recipe itself gives kids an opportunity to practice their reading and perhaps learn new vocabulary that they may not have come across in their usual school curriculum!

3. Helps to develop Fine Motor Skills

Cooking with children, especially younger kids is an excellent way to help develop their fine motor skills. Measuring out ingredients, stirring, and even cutting up ingredients (be sure to use a safe kid-friendly knife!) can all be easy ways to develop motor skills.

4. Builds Confidence

Helping to prepare a family meal or some snacks and then serving it up themselves can give children a massive sense of achievement and boosts their self worth!
