Thanks to the unusually mild Autumn we’re having I’m still enjoying the odd smoothie for breakfast or as an afternoon snack.
And with this smoothie containing two of my favourite things (chocolate AND coffee!) I may just be slurping this down well into winter!
I had been meaning to make a mocha smoothie for a while and when I bought some maca powder recently I thought it would make the perfect addition.
Maca Powder
After reading a lot about maca powder I decided to give it a try myself. Maca, a root closely related to radishes, has been grown in the mountains of Peru for thousands of years and has recently found its way onto current superfood lists.
The health claims of maca powder are pretty far reaching; from increased energy and athletic stamina to heightened mental focus and boosted metabolism.
I’m not gonna lie and say that maca powder tastes amazing. It has a very earthy malty taste. Some people seem to love it but with me I think it’s going to take a bit of getting used to.
But that’s why smoothies are a fantastic way to integrate maca powder into your diet. The strong flavours of this Mocha Smoothie compliment the taste of the maca powder without allowing it to be overpowering.
I added one tablespoon in this recipe but you can start with a little less if you are unsure that you will like the taste.

Ingredients
- ½ cup coffee, cooled
- ¾ cup almond milk
- 1 frozen banana
- 2 tsp cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp maca powder
- ½ tbsp honey / maple syrup
- ¼ tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Put all the ingredients into a blender and blitz until smooth. Serve immediately, with ice if you wish.
