It wouldn’t be Christmas without some homemade sausage rolls. Usually made with pork sausages and pastry, they can be quite heavy but try my lightened up version using chicken or turkey sausages and tortilla wraps instead.
We love sausage rolls all year round but I have to say they are an absolute must at Christmas time, especially homemade sausage rolls. They make a really tasty lunch or snack are brilliant party nibbles if you have guests.
This year I decided to make a lightened up version. Generally I use pork sausage meat and puff pastry which are both delicious but obviously quite high in calories and fat.
How To Make Healthy Sausage Rolls
My healthier sausage rolls are made using turkey or chicken sausages and instead of covering them in pastry I’m using tortilla wraps instead.
I removed the sausages from their skins and mixed it with a little chutney for some extra Christmas-y flavour.
I then took half the mixture and placed it on one of the wraps.
Then simply roll up the wrap ensuring that the seam side stays down then cut into six sausage rolls.
Repeat with the remaining sausage meat and the other wrap. This recipe will make 12 sausage rolls in total.
Transfer the sausage rolls onto a lined and greased tray and finish with an egg wash and some sesame seeds.
Bake in the oven at 200c for 20 minutes.
The result is delicious golden brown and crispy sausage rolls. All the taste and flavour, just a bit lighter on the calories and fat content.
Ingredient Substitutions
Sausages – I used turkey sausages in this recipe but chicken sausages will work just the same. You can of course use pork sausages if you prefer or even veggies sausages too.
Tortilla Wrap – I used a 50/50 white/wholemeal wrap but feel free to use all white or all wholemeal if you prefer.
Gluten Free – Gluten free wraps will work just fine.
Egg – If you have an egg allergy then you can use a little milk instead to wash the top of the sausage rolls
Sesame Seeds – These can be left out if you don’t like them. Or use poppy seeds instead.
Freezing Sausage Rolls
If you want to get ahead of your Christmas cooking and get these all prepped now then you can make the sausage rolls but instead of baking them, flash freeze them on a tray or plate for a few hours until hard.
Then transfer to a freezer bag or container to store in the freezer.
When you want to cook them you can bake them directly from frozen. Add them to a lined and greased baking tray, adding an extra 10 minutes approximately to the cooking time.

Description
It wouldn’t be Christmas without some homemade sausage rolls. Usually made with pork sausages and pastry, they can be quite heavy but try my lightened up version using chicken or turkey sausages and tortilla wraps instead.
Ingredients
- spray oil
- 8 (450g) turkey or chicken sausages
- 2 tbsp chutney
- 2 large tortilla wraps
- 1 medium egg
- 1 tsp sesame seeds
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200c and line a baking tray with parchment paper. Spray a little oil over the surface of the paper.
- Remove the sausages from their skins and add to a bowl with the chutney. Mix well.
- Place one wrap on a chopping board. Take half of the sausage mixture and add it to the wrap, just right of centre.
- Starting on the right hand side roll the wrap up as tightly as you can, making sure you finish seal side down.
- Cut off the ends of the wrap then cut into six sausage rolls.
- Repeat with the other wrap.
- Place the sausage rolls onto the lined tray.
- Beat the egg lightly in a cup or bowl and brush over the top of the sausage rolls.
- Finally sprinkle on the sesame seeds.
- Bake in the oven for 20 minutes until the sausage rolls are golden brown on top.
- Leave the sausage rolls to cool for a few minutes before removing and serving.
Notes
- These sausage rolls are best served warm from the oven but they will keep for up to 3 days in the fridge. You can reheat in the oven for a few minutes.
- If you want to get ahead of your Christmas cooking and get these all prepped now then you can make the sausage rolls but instead of baking them, flash freeze them on a tray or plate for a few hours until hard. Then transfer to a freezer bag or container to store in the freezer. When you want to cook them you can bake them directly from frozen. Tried these after wanting to be a bit healthier with my eating post lockdown and I’m so pleased I did. They are delicious and I love that you can make ahead and freeze, only taking out and cooking what you need for a nice working from home lunch!

Should the temperature be reduced to 180 for fan ovens? Mine are only in 10 mins and already seem like they’re burning 🤔 smell great though!
