A Christmas favourite; Pigs in Blankets made a little healthier using chicken chipolatas and lean bacon. A delicious festive snack or addition to your Christmas dinner.

You can’t beat Pigs in Blankets are this time of year. There’s something so festive about them and our Christmas dinner wouldn’t be complete without a big bowl. Not to mention that my daughter absolutely loves them and would happily eat a whole plateful on their own!
This year I set about trying to make a healthier version that are a little lower in calories and lower in saturated fat.
Healthier Pigs In Blankets Ingredients
I used these Heck chicken chipolata sausages instead of pork sausages. I know Aldi do a similar version too which you could use.
To wrap them I tried lean bacon medallions and also turkey rashers. Both turned out well but the turkey rashers probably went a little crispier in the oven.
The final ingredient you will need is just a little spray oil to stop them from sticking.

How To Make Healthier Pigs In Blankets
The first step is to cut the chipolatas and bacon in half. You’ll need 10 chipolatas and 10 pieces of bacon, making 20 pigs in blankets in total.

Next, take a piece of bacon and wrap it around the chipolata then place it on a lined tray seam side down.
Repeat with the rest of the chipolatas and bacon and then bake in the oven for 25 minutes.

Ingredient Substitutions
Chipolatas – I used chicken chipolatas but you can of course use classic pork too or even veggie sausages.
Bacon – As mentioned above I tried this recipe with both bacon medallions and turkey bacon. Personally I preferred the turkey bacon as it went a little more crispy in the oven.

Freezing Pigs In Blankets
If you want to get ahead of your Christmas cooking and get these all prepped now then you can make the pigs in blankets but instead of baking them, flash freeze them on a tray or plate for a few hours until hard.
Then transfer to a freezer bag or container to store in the freezer.
When you want to cook them you can either defrost them and bake as normal or bake them directly from frozen, adding an extra 10-15 minutes to the cooking time.
