A simple but impressive way of serving a Caprese Salad. A great way to get kids excited about tomatoes!
Lets face it, salad just isn’t exciting to kids. As much as we try to convince our children that lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber are all delicious, most are not convinced! So how can we encourage them to eat more salad? For me the key is to make food interesting and exciting. A bowl of fresh raw salad ingredients may look vibrant and tasty to us, but to children it looks bland and boring.
So I decided to give the simple Caprese Salad a makeover… hasselback style! These hedgehog style tomatoes now look a lot for appetizing to kids and are sure to spark their imagination when it comes to foods that they would ordinarily turn down.
They are so easy to make with just a few simple ingredients. Check out the short video below.

Description
A simple but impressive way of serving a Caprese Salad. A great way to get kids excited about tomatoes!
Ingredients
- 3 medium or 2 large tomatoes
- 1 mozzarella ball
- basil leaves
- olive oil
- balsamic drizzle
Instructions
- Slice the mozzarella ball into roughly 1cm slices.
- Makes slices in the tomatoes ensuring that you do not cut all the way through.
- Place half a slice of mozzarella into each of the slits in the tomatoes.
- Add a basil leaf to each of the slits.
- Drizzle each of the tomatoes with olive oil and balsamic drizzle.
- Serve immediately.
