Get your morning off to a healthy but tasty start with this Choco Banana Breakfast Smoothie.

So the new school year is back in full swing and I have to admit that all those lazy summer mornings are coming back to haunt me!

Allowing my fussy eater to lounge around in her pj’s and eat breakfast at her leisure for a whole 6 weeks was lovely! But we’re struggling to pick up the pace now that we need to be up, fully dressed, fed and out the door before 9am!

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but sometimes it’s also the hardest one to come up with as parents as we always seem to be in a rush in the mornings!

So in an attempt to make our morning routine a little less hectic I’m trying to find some new healthy breakfast ideas that are super quick and easy.

banana oat breakfast smoothie

First up is this delicious Choco-Banana Breakfast Smoothie.

It’s packed full of energy with the oats and banana giving kids a natural energy boost.

It’s also low GI too, giving sustained release throughout the morning, making it the perfect start to the day.

Milk is of course an excellent source of protein as well as healthy fats and the *cocoa provides natural antioxidants and nutrients.

*Just make sure it’s 100% cocoa and not the added sugar hot chocolate kind.

Dairy Alternatives:

I used cows milk but you can use any milk of your choice. You could easily use the following alternatives for dairy free and vegan versions:

  • Almond Milk
  • Hazelnut Milk
  • Coconut Milk
  • Soy Milk

Oats

Oats are a great source of protein which means they keep tummies fuller for longer!

But I know a lot of kids aren’t huge fans of porridge or a bowl of quick oats first thing in the morning, so adding them to a smoothie is a great way to get them into their diet!

And because they are naturally gluten free, oats are a great choice for breakfast if you or your kids are following a gluten-free diet.

Serve this banana oat smoothie in tall glasses with a colourful straw and garnish with slices of banana, a sprinkling of oats and cocoa powder for a breakfast that is sure to have the kids getting a healthy dose of oats without any complaints!

You can see the full list of ingredients and instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

What was the verdict on this Delicious Banana Smoothie?

My fussy eater loved this smoothie. I did worry that it might not be sweet enough for her tastes, but the banana provides enough natural sweetness as long as you use ripe bananas.

You could add a touch of honey to this smoothie if you wanted to, but I don’t think it really needs it.

You might also be worried that the smoothie will be quite ‘bitty’ because of the oats but just be sure to blend the smoothie enough so that all the oats are well combined.

This smoothie was such a success and I was really pleased how quick it was to throw together in the morning.

Sometimes the best breakfasts really are easiest ones that only use a handful of simple ingredients!

And my fussy eater was thrilled at the thought of having chocolate for breakfast!
