Delicious sausage rolls made easy with just five ingredients including chicken sausages and tortilla wraps. No pastry needed!

Sausage Rolls… you just can’t beat them! They’re a firm favourite in this house, loved by adults and kids and perfect for a quick and easy lunch or even afternoon snack when the kids get in from school.
But whilst I love the taste of a freshly cooked sausage roll that’s encased with lots of buttery puff pastry, unfortunately they aren’t that healthy.
So I wanted to make something that was a little healthier so that we could enjoy our favourite snack a bit more regularly. As well as making sure it was an easy recipe!
Last Christmas I made this lightened up version of sausage rolls using turkey sausages, chutney and tortilla wraps instead of pastry.
Why You’ll Love These Easy Sausage Rolls!
It may seem a little strange to use a wrap instead of puff pastry sheets but trust me it really works. The wraps gets really crispy in the oven and you won’t miss the pastry at all.
And as for using a chicken filling in the sausage rolls instead of the more traditional filling ingredients of pork sausage, then I promise you this recipe will convert you!
I used chicken sausages in this recipe. I love the Tesco owned brand ones but any chicken or turkey sausages will work just fine.
These ones are the plain chicken ones, but there are loads of flavoured ones out there too that could experiment with!
You could of course use ground chicken for the sausage roll filling, but to be honest, using chicken sausage meat is far easier! And they are already flavoured with seasoning so need to add your own!
How To Make Sausage Rolls Without Pastry
Firstly, remove the skins and mash them in a bowl with a fork.
Next take a wrap and place it on a chopping board.

Add half of the sausage mixture to the wrap, just right of centre.
Starting on the right hand side, fold the wrap up as tightly as you can, making sure to finish seal side down.

Cut off the ends of the wrap with a sharp knife and then cut into six sausage rolls. Repeat with the second wrap and the remainder of the the sausage mixture.
Place all the sausage rolls onto the baking tray making sure you’ve lined the tray with parchment paper first.
Lightly beat the egg in the cup or bowl and using a pastry brush, brush the egg wash over the top of the sausage rolls. Finally add some sesame seeds on top.

Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and the sausage meat has cooked all the way through.

INGREDIENT SUBSTITUTIONS
Sausages – I used chicken sausages in this recipe but turkey sausages will work just the same. You can of course use pork sausages if you prefer or even veggies sausages too.
Tortilla Wrap – I used a white wrap but feel free to use wholemeal or a 50/50 wrap too.
Gluten Free – Gluten free wraps will work just fine.
Egg – If you have an egg allergy then you can use a little milk instead to wash the top of the sausage rolls.
Sesame Seeds – These can be left out if you don’t like them. Or use poppy seeds instead.

Notes
- These sausage rolls are best served warm from the oven but they will keep for up to 3 days in the fridge. You can reheat in the oven for a few minutes.
- If you want to get ahead of your Christmas cooking and get these all prepped now then you can make the sausage rolls but instead of baking them, flash freeze them on a tray or plate for a few hours until hard. Then transfer to a zip lock bag or freezer-safe container to store in the freezer. When you want to cook them you can bake them directly from frozen. Add them to a lined and greased baking tray, adding an extra 10 minutes approximately to the cooking time.
- For lunchboxes, cook as normal then cool and add to freezer bags. Pop straight from the freezer into lunchboxes early in the morning and they’ll be defrosted and ready to eat by lunch time.

Chicken sausages are extremely popular here in Oz, much more than pork, the kids favourite are called Malay chicken sausages which are quite sweet. They are available in all the butchers here, Donna Hay did a kids cooking class online late last year using flat breads to wrap sausages so you are very on trend with these.
