Tasty soft weaning-friendly bars made with just four simple ingredients; oats, banana, berries and chia seeds. Ideal for baby led weaning and toddlers too.
My kids are long past the weaning stage but I still like to make the odd weaning recipe now and then as I get so many requests from parents.
One thing that gets requested a lot is snacks. Easy homemade and healthy snacks that are perfect for weaning babies and toddlers too. So I decided to try a really simple oat bar recipe made with just four ingredient. It couldn’t be any easier!
These bars are also gluten, dairy, egg and nut free so you don’t have to worry about any of the common food allergins. Just be sure to use certified gluten free oats.
Ingredients:
The four ingredients we are using for this recipe are:
- Frozen Berries (I used strawberries, raspberries and blueberries)
- Banana
- Chia Seeds
- Oats (rolled or porridge oats)
STEP 1:
Add the berries to a saucepan along with 2 tablespoon of water and cook for a few minutes to break the berries down.
STEP 2:
Use a potato masher to give the berries a final mash and turn off the heat.
STEP 3:
Add the banana and chia seeds and mix well.
STEP 4:
Add the oats and mix again.
STEP 5:
Add the mixture into a lined baking dish. I’ve used an 8x8in dish.
STEP 6:
Bake at 180c for 18 minutes. Remove from the oven and lift the paper out of the dish. Leave to cool for a few minutes before cutting into 16 squares.
STORING & FREEZING:
Once cooled these bars can be kept in the fridge for up to 4 days. They are totally fine to eat cold or at room temperature but you can also pop them into the microwave for a few seconds to warm them through.
They can also be frozen. Wrap in individual layers of parchment paper to prevent them from sticking. They will defrost at room temperature in just a couple of house.

My daughter loves these! I’ve been making these since she was 6 months old and just starting BLW, she used to eat them as a meal and now at almost 1 year old I serve as a snack. These are a staple in our household! One of my favorite blw recipes I’ve found. I live in us so I do 1 cup oats and 1 cups berries which is super easy to memorize without having to look up the recipe which I love!

Could you add some nut meal to these or would it end up too crunchy?
Sharnee says
Does any one have the problem of them being to moist? Especially in the centre, we love them in the house but every time I’ve done them I can’t get the right, what am I doing wrong?
Randi says
Can I use flaxseed in replace of chia seedm
Bianca Carey Spencer says
Hi Randi! Generally flax and chia seeds can be substituted for one another in baking but we’ve not tried flaxseed in this recipe so not sure how it would turn out. If you do try it, do let us know how you get on.

I made these last night to take as a snack for our trip to the zoo. They were perfect, my 3 year old and 10 month old both loved them, there were tears from my 10 month old when I told him they were gone! These will definitely be a regular in house.
