So the new school year is back in full swing and I have to admit that all those lazy summer mornings are coming back to haunt me. Allowing my fussy eater to lounge around in her pj’s and eat breakfast at her leisure for a whole 6 weeks was lovely, but we’re struggling to pick up the pace now that we need to be up, fully dressed, fed and out the door before 9am! So in an attempt to make our morning routine a little less hectic I’m trying to find some new healthy breakfast ideas that are super quick and easy.
First up is this delicious Choco-Banana Breakfast Smoothie. It’s packed full of energy with the oats and banana giving kids a natural energy boost, yet low GI too, giving sustained release throughout the morning. Milk is of course an excellent source of protein and the cocoa provides natural antioxidents and nutrients. Just make sure it’s 100% cocoa and not the sugar-loaded hot chocolate kind.
I used cows milk in this smoothie but you could easily swap it for almond or hazelnut milk for a dairy free vegan version.
My fussy eater loved this smoothie. I did worry that it might not be sweet enough for her tastes but the banana provides enough natural sweetness if it is ripe enough. You might also be worried that the smoothie will be quite ‘bity’ because of the oats but just be sure to blend the smoothie enough so that all the oats are well combined.
This smoothie was such a success and I was really pleased how quick it was to throw together in the morning. And my fussy eater was thrilled at the thought of having chocolate for breakfast!
- 200ml milk (Cow's, Almond, etc)
- 1 banana
- 2 tbsp oats
- 1 tsp cocoa
- 4-6 ice cubes
- Put all the ingredients into a blender and blitz until smooth. You can add more or less milk depending on how thick you like your smoothie. Drink immediately or keep it in the fridge for up to 12 hours (you will need to shake it up before you drink it though).
